UX Audit — The Chinese Association Gauteng (TCAG)

TCAG (The Chinese Association Gauteng) is a community-based organisation that primarily supports the Chinese elder community in Gauteng. They approached me to redesign their website to improve usability and accessibility.

Mobile Accessibility

The original website was not mobile-friendly and hadn’t been designed with a mobile-first approach.

Data from 2020 showed that most South Africans accessed their website via mobile devices — highlighting the need for responsive layouts and optimized navigation for smaller screens.

Accessibility & Colour Contrast

Low contrast ratios and poor colour choices made it difficult for users with visual impairments or colour deficiencies to navigate the site.
Improving contrast and adopting an accessible colour palette became a key recommendation to enhance readability and inclusivity.

UX Copy & Mental Models

The site’s language didn’t align with users’ mental models.
For example, labels like “Getting there” were used instead of “Directions”, which caused confusion.
Refining the UX copy to match common terminology helped improve clarity and task completion.

Content Formatting & Engagement

Most pages featured long, unbroken blocks of text with few visual elements.
This discouraged reading and reduced engagement.
Introducing imagery of real community members helped humanise the site and strengthen the emotional connection with visitors — a far better approach than generic stock photos.
